What does it mean to be a Registered Dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian is a medical professional and at a miniumum has completed:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics (or related field) that meets coursework approved by the Academy on Nutrition and Dietetics. Coursework includes nutrition sciences, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, anatomy, and chemistry to name a few. (Yes, the same courses that students applying for medical school were completing).
An accredited supervised practice of at least 1200 hours. It’s important to note that these supervised practice opportunities are not built into curriculum. They are applied for upon completion of the Bachelor’s Degree, and 50% or more students applying do not get accepted. That means only the best of the best are even able to complete this step.
A national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) with a passing score. In order to maintain the credential, an RD must complete continuing professional educational requirements yearly.
The term nutritionist is a generic term that can be used by anyone in most states. Nutritionists do not typically have any professional training, or education, and therefore, should not be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of any disease or the prescription of a specific diet.
In Ohio, it is illegal to perform individualized nutrition counseling and/or care including: nutritional assessment, goal setting, counseling, or advice unless you are Registered and Licensed Dietitian.
I have a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and have been an RD since 2003. I've been published in several textbooks and peer-reviewed medical journals. I have also been featured in Men's Health, Fox News and US News.
Who should see a Registered Dietitian?
Anyone! Registered dietitians have extensive clinical training and can translate evidence-based science into practical advice! Read that again, EVIDENCE- BASED SCIENCE. What does that mean? An RD uses the best evidence from well-designed studies in order to make decisions and provide advice to clients. An RD does not promote fads or make recommendations based off a single study (or only a few studies).
Here are some reasons to see an RD:
I’m healthy (I think), but want to make sure I’m on the right track and see if there is anything I can do to optimize my health even more and/or make eating healthy easier. (Spoiler alert – a LOT of clients assume they are making healthy choices, but they have been blinded with diet misinformation).
I want to run a half marathon and have no idea what to eat!
I am running a half marathon and want to PR!
I want to lose body fat and increase lean muscle.
I have chronic potty issues (diarrhea, constipation, cramps, etc.).
I have chronic health conditions (high cholesterol, high blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases) that can be positively impacted with proper nutrition
I’m breastfeeding and I’m starving! What am I doing wrong?
I just have a lot of questions. I don’t know what to believe anymore.
Help! I don’t even know where to begin or what to ask. My diet is a wreck and I don’t know how to make it a priority.
I take a lot of vitamin and mineral supplements. I’m not sure if I should be taking them! Help!
How much does it cost to meet with Dena?
If you ask me it’s a bargain, but it depends on what your definition of expensive is. It costs less than most people spend on their weekly grocery bill or a pair of our favorite Lululemon leggings. $100 for a 60-minute consult, $50 for a 30-minute consult , $40 for a follow-up 7-day Food Log Review, or go BIG with our Online Challenge + 30-minute consult for $150. *The challenge begins January 13!
Will you put me on a diet?
Nope. They don’t work, and neither do quick fixes. Instead we will talk about reasonable changes that can have a big impact on your health and well-being.
What can I expect at a visit?
Every visit is different because every client is different. Sometimes clients just want to pick my brain while others some want help with goal setting or meal planning. You tell me what you need and I will adjust! Not sure where to begin? No problem! We will figure it out together.
I’m nervous. I don’t want to be judged. I’m afraid of what you will think of me.I don’t even know where to begin. I’m embarrassed about how unhealthy my diet is. I don’t want to give up my favorite foods.
I can promise you I did NOT become an RD to judge you (or anyone)! I am not perfect – trust me! I am here to listen and help. I think you will find if you ask anyone who has met with me that judgment is the last thing on my mind. We are all just trying to do the best we can.
Oh, and I would never ask you to give up your favorite foods!
