It's our favorite time of year: RISE ATHLETE Spotlights!
These athletes are real people taking care of their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, AND leading our team in the studio daily. NEXT UP TO BAT: MICHAELA M. [On Deck: EMILY S]
Q: What made you change your path in 2018? I was sick and tired of being tired. My job responsibilities had changed drastically in the last year and that caused me to make excuse after excuse as to why I couldn’t take time for myself. Working 10-12 hour days, everyday I felt like I was in a fog and unhappy. Then my very healthy dad (former military, still works out 6 days a week, takes great care of himself) had a major heart attack and the doctor said the only reason he survived was because he was in good health. That was when I knew, it was time for no more excuses and to put myself first.
Q: Why RISE? Community, hands down. Everyday when I walk in the studio I feel at home, I feel at peace, I feel the stress leaving my body. When I’m at RISE, it is one of the few times I can put the stress of my job out of mind and truly focus on myself. Not just the trainers, but all the athletes, are are so welcoming and genuinely kind. I knew RISE was the right place because even at the end of a very hard workout people left smiling. I also enjoy the variety of classes, no workout is ever the same.
Q: What have you learned about yourself? I am stronger than I ever imagined. Not just physically but mentally too. RISE has helped to inspire me to believe in myself more than I ever have. “Second half faster. Second half stronger.” has now become a daily mantra for me. I used to get stuck in ruts but now I believe that I have the control to make all aspects of my life stronger and faster.
Q: What were your initial goals? How have your goals transformed over time? I initially started wanting to find my path to physical fitness again and using working out as a ways to relieve stress. Now, my goals are not just physical fitness but mental fitness too. I love that all the trainers emphasize that your workout is for you; some days I can go all out and high impact and some days it may just be to blow off steam, and that is okay. I started wanting to grow my muscles and the number of miles I can run but now I continue to workout to increase my mental strength. I also now have my dad in the back of my mind with every workout that I do.
Q: What's your favorite class? Favorite exercise? Least favorite exercise? In RISE Run Club I love pursuit because of all the other RISE workouts I can step on that treadmill and complete all the miles in pursuit. I never considered my self a runner and it makes me so proud and I love my body even more when I finish a pursuit class. HIIT IT Base is another favorite because I made a pact with myself to never miss a Monday workout. I did that because no matter how the rest of my week unfolds, at least I accomplished my Monday. BASE is a great way to start my week as it resets my form and helps me prepare for all the classes I have scheduled that week.
Q: What do you want others to know? If you’re looking to make a change, start a new routine, or just find a great place to workout: RISE is it. The trainers are extremely knowledge and each and everyone of them want you to succeed. Before RISE, I didn’t believe I could do hard things. Thanks to the trainers, now I realize “I can do hard things”, “I can do anything for 60 seconds”, “I need to thank my body for pushing me through that workout”.
Do you see that smile? This is what RISE trainers see from Michaela no matter how hard the workout is. She walks in knowing that this is what her body and mind need to be on balance before heading to OSU for the day. Her energy is kind, her work ethic is relentless, and she shares her good vibes with her RISE teammates every day. The "never miss a Monday" is just the tip of the iceburg for this athlete who studied nutrition & community health back in the day.
Michaela, thank you so much for being a RISE athlete and reminding everyone around you that we can do hard things too!
