As our minds turn to back-to-school, Buckeye football season and of course MARATHONING, we can't help but have this athlete on our minds. Julie N has one of the hardest jobs as an elementary school principal and is a mom of three incredible kids. She makes ZERO excuses in taking care of her health or getting team mileage in on our favorite route around the Shoe. When our Saturday morning RISE Run Club runs come back on our schedule each training season, we know that Julie will be the first to sign up, show up and get some cheerful sunrise mileage in with her teammates. With a big smile on her face, she comes to work hard, chooses a growth mindset, and is on the search for new information about overall health & wellness. Julie, thank you for running through the seasons with us, for sharing your wisdom & experience with those around you, and for being an ORIGINAL RISE ATHLETE! You are the kind of athlete that we are all working towards.
What gets you out of bed first thing in the morning?
Mornings, my whole life, have always been the best time of day for me to get a lot accomplished. The earlier the better! Seeing the sun rise fills my mind, body and spirit and is a great way to start the day. Being a mom to my three children, is my most important job. And my hardest job, for sure! My family quite literally gets me out of bed, although, now that they are older it's mom coming home from RISE getting them out of bed! I'm lucky, too, that I get to go each day to a place filled with amazing children, families and staff who truly want to make a difference.
Why is your health your top priority?
I have always been fairly active. My nickname growing up was Hurricane, if that helps to paint a picture. My physical health (exercise, nutrition & rest), help me so that I can take care of my family and hopefully make a difference each day at work. To me "health" encompasses 4 dimensions. Many years ago, I learned the importance of making sure regularly I am "checking in" with myself to make sure there is good balance and renewal in all four dimensions, including the physical dimension. Making sure my social/emotional well being (relationships), mental health (reading, writing, learning and studying) and my spiritual health (service, values, meditation) are in balance mean my overall health is a top priority. I’m a work in progress always!
What exercise do you LOVE? What exercise do you LOVE to hate?
I love to run! I hate to run! No, really I love it a lot. But at times, I hate it too! About a year, after each of my children were born I ran a marathon. Running has always been an important part of my life. However, I joke that I LIKE to run, but I'm not really a runner. I love to run with other people. Some of my closest friends/confidants are running friends. What other sport do you have so much time to be together and just talk (and run)! Running is fun and most importantly it helps keep my mind clear. As a friend recently shared on a long run, 30 minutes of vigorous exercise naturally releases endorphins. For my mental health, it certainly makes a difference.
What is your favorite memory as a RISE athlete?
I feel very fortunate to have this community help start my day. From the early mornings at the high school, to dancing with JT's backup crew, to training with Michelle in 2015 for Columbus in the torrential downpour on an 18 miler....and, my funniest memory is having strawberries in places that you shouldn't have strawberries. You know you've had a hard workout when you realize your roll-ups worked really well but maybe in the wrong places. Thank you, RISE!
